Kindermusik Lessons No Longer Offered

We regret to inform potential students that Joyful Sounds Music Studio will no longer be offering Kindermusik classes. Support for the program is being dropped due to the difficulty in scheduling large enough classes to make the classes worthwhile. In addition, a suitable teaching location could not be secured for large classes. Joyful Sounds would like to take this opportunity to offer piano or beginning instrument tutoring as a replacement for the Kindermusik program. These lessons are one-on-one and can begin as soon as a child is proficient in their ABCs and counting. It's a big misconception that you have to have a large piano in your home in order to do piano lessons. In fact, some of our students are successful and enjoy lessons with electronic keyboards in their home. Your child can still learn to play piano, and can practice at home on their own keyboards.

Fall 2004 Lessons

Joyful Sounds Music Studio is now accepting new students for the fall semester. Lessons are given Monday . Friday from 8:30 am . 6:00 pm. Morning and early afternoon times are perfect for home-schoolers and adult students. Late afternoon and early evening classes are set for traditional students. Later class times are available in some situations. Each class is 30 minutes with a 15-minute practice/computer lab time before. This allows the student a chance to have a final preparation before lessons, which allows a more focused and effective lesson time. Also, a parent can drop off the student and have a 45-minute break to run errands or just relax in the park across the street! Siblings will be able to practice and have computer time in the opposite half-hour and will both will be done in one hour. Please call 720-371-2051 to schedule or with any questions you have about Joyful Sounds Music Studio.

Piano Camp 2004!

This year marked the first year of Joyful Sounds Piano Camps! We had 2 levels of Camp, 1-A and 1-B. The 1-A Camp was attended by 6 new beginners, all were brand new to music. In the piano and music theory portions, we learned about highs and lows, loud and soft sounds, and black key groups. We also found the musical alphabet on the piano and learned many music symbols. In the music appreciation portion, we learned about three composers (Mozart, Beethoven, and Sousa). We also talked about the history of music from prehistoric man through the origins of classical music and the piano. We also had group listening and rhythm times, with each student having a chance at different instruments. The sleigh bells and the guiro were the class favorites! In projects and crafts, we also made our own shakers, flashcards, and hand maps.

In camp 1-B, we had two students. This camp is geared to our Music for Little Mozarts students. This series is for students ages 4 - 6, and focuses on a well-rounded piano student, with singing, rhythm and listening included. Each day started with the "Hello Song!" and group singing. We reviewed concepts from the past year and played games that incorporated all of our music symbols. We focused on ear training and sight-reading throughout the day. We also had "Peer Recitals" everyday, where we learned about performance and audience etiquette. We also had practice and computer stations in the music lab area.

In both camps, "Joyful Sounds Points" were earned for each activity completed. We had some amazing point totals in the 350 range. At the end of the week, students were able to turn in their points for prizes. The favorites were a fishing game, play dough, and coloring books. Each student ended up with 2 or more prizes and a beautiful certificate to commemorate the completion of their first Joyful Sounds Piano Camp.

Joyful Sounds Announcement

Come one! Come all! Joyful Sounds is getting geared up for Summer Camps!!! This is the first year and we are excited about this new opportunity. As people travel in the summer, it is hard to commit to a weekly lesson. In July, there will be no weekly lessons. Instead, there will be a Piano Camp. It will be from July 19th through July 23rd. Camps will be from 9am – 12pm for elementary – intermediate students and 1pm – 3pm for primer – early elementary students. If you have a child who is interested in piano, but you are not ready to make a full commitment, then try Joyful Sounds Piano Camp! This will give them a head start for lessons, or a brief overview to whet their curiosity. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail

Music Helps Early Childhood Development

This is an excerpt from an article I read about how music plays an important role in early childhood development. Click the link below to read the entire article.

A research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reports that music training -- specifically piano instruction -- is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science.

The new findings, published in the February 1997 issue of Neurological Research, are the result of a two-year experiment with preschoolers, led by psychologist Dr. Frances Rauscher of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and physicist Dr. Gordon Shaw of the University of California at Irvine. As a follow-up to their groundbreaking studies indicating how music can enhance spatial-reasoning ability, the researchers set out to compare the effects of musical and non-musical training on intellectual development.

New "Joyful Points" Initiative

This fall we will be implementing two new programs for our Elementary school-age students. On a specific day each month, a peer recital program will be available. The students will come with a prepared piece from that month’s lessons to perform. The recital will also give us the opportunity to learn and practice, appropriate and polite concert etiquette. This will not interfere with make up lessons. (Note: This is a parent-free opportunity for students to try out songs without the added pressure of other adults.)

Along with this monthly activity, we will be adding “Joyful Points”. This program will give points for certain activities (i.e. practicing 30 minutes, finishing a book, doing extra credit, etc.). Each student will save up their points each month and will have the opportunity to “Cash In” their points at the monthly recital for prizes. There will be many little trinkets, from fun notepads and pencils to stickers and small toys.

Did You Know?

Music study can help kids understand advanced music concepts. A grasp of proportional math and fractions is a prerequisite to math at higher levels, and children who do not master these areas cannot understand more advanced math critical to high-tech fields. Music involves ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. Second-grade students were given four months of piano keyboard training, as well as time using newly designed math software. The group scored over 27 percent higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who used only the math software.

Music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school. Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas studied the undergraduate majors of medical school applicants. He found that 66 percent of music majors who applied to med school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group. For comparison, (44 percent) of biochemistry majors were admitted. Also, a study of 7,500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry and math.

Middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests. University studies conducted in Georgia and Texas found significant correlations between the number of years of instrumental music instruction and academic achievement in math, science and language arts.

Did You Know?

Students who were exposed to the music-based lessons scored a full 100 percent higher on fractions tests than those who learned in the conventional manner. Second-grade and third-grade students were taught fractions in an untraditional manner by teaching them basic music rhythm notation. The group was taught about the relationships between eighth, quarter, half and whole notes. Their peers received traditional fraction instruction.
